This workshop is invaluable for all documentary researchers, writers, directors and producers to learn about navigating the world of research and clearances. Learn the latest on how to obtain, reduce costs and limit risks using stock footage, stills and recorded music.

E-handouts and a follow up question for each participant are included in the workshop package.

Visual Research:
How to find the best sources of visual material - photographs, archival film, graphics, and maps
Finding and buying stock footage and stills
Negotiating terms and rates
Inexpensive alternatives to expensive archival footage
Documenting “due diligence” or best effort

Music Clearances:
Music Clearance 101 – definitions, costs, rights required
Creative tips on how to clear music with a budget in mind

ELizabeth Klinck has worked as producer, researcher and clearance specialist on numerous award-winning Canadian, American and British documentary films that have garnered Emmy, Gemini, Peabody and Academy awards.

She has taught documentary research and development at Ryerson University in Toronto and has led research and rights clearance workshops at numerous international conferences and broadcasters including RealScreen, History Makers, Sunnyside of the Doc (North America), Banff World Television Festival, The World Congress of Science & Factual Producers, Hot Docs, the National Film Board of Canada, CTV, Discovery, History Television, the Reel World Film Festival, WIFT International Summit, and at the Atlantic and Vancouver International  Film Festivals.

Elizabeth has been nominated for a Canadian Gemini Award for Ted Allan (co-producer) in 2002. In 2005 she received a nomination for the FOCAL International Researcher of the Year Award and the following year received an Emmy nomination in the category Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft – Research. She was recently awarded the FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award.

Elizabeth serves as a member of the FOCAL International Executive, and History makers. She is a founding chairperson of the Visual Researchers’ Society of Canada and is a member of DOC and WIFT Toronto.
