WRITING THE PAST, OR EXCUSE ME, YOUR RESEARCH IS SHOWING
Saturday, April 12, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
1200 Atwater Avenue, Atwater Library Auditorium
Workshop leader: Merilyn Simonds
An intensive workshop on the particular challenges of writing convincing and compelling fiction set in the past. Through examples and writing exercises, participants will explore the issues of research (how much is too much?), finding an original, yet authentic voice, the use and abuse of archaic language and syntax, and the legal/ethical dilemmas involved in shaping real-life characters and events into fiction. The course will cover research sources and techniques as well as tricks for “getting into” historical characters and ferreting out the insidious, hideous beast of anachronism.
This workshop will be useful for serious writers beginning a new project as well as those with a manuscript underway. Writers with a work-in-progress are invited to send no more than a 10-page sample at least 3 weeks in advance. It will be returned on the day of the workshop with detailed comments. If possible, time will be set aside for short personal conferences. Send samples by email to admin@qwf.org by March 21 at the very latest. Please write “For Simonds” in the subject line.
Merilyn Simonds is an award-winning writer whose books include The Convict Lover (set in 1920), a finalist for the Governor General's Award, and the internationally acclaimed story collection, The Lion in the Room Next Door. Her novel, The Holding, set in 1859 and 1990, was on the Canadian Independent Booksellers' bestseller list for six months, and was selected a New York Times Editors' Choice.
