WRITING NON-FICTION FROM DETAIL TO RETAIL
Outside of Montreal!
Two Sundays, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.: March 9 and 23

Wakefield Library, 20 Valley Drive, Wakefield
Workshop leader: Phil Jenkins

The first rule of art is to finish what you start. The second is to sell what you have to tell. …..rite – rewrite – rewrite - rewr…..

Non-fiction no longer rides second-class in Canadian literature, with the novelists up in first class ordering off the menu. In two four-hour workshop sessions held in the Wakefield library two Sundays apart, Phil Jenkins will reveal all he’s learnt about the craft of telling true stories, with the emphasis on anything but books on the first day, and creative non-fiction books on the second. Remember, it can only get better. There will be very useful hand-outs.

Topics we’ll cover in the two workshops include:

Session One - March 9
• Brief philosophical discussion of the craft of writing.
• Writing warm-up.
• What’s in the non-fiction basket.
• Some fine examples of non-fiction.
• Discovering your inner topic.
• Writing task.
• Anti-bad writing techniques and making it gooder.
• From screen to magazine.
• Aphorisms to do write by.

Writing Assignment: To be completed and emailed to Phil before second session.

Session Two - March 23
• How did we do?
• What the heck is creative non-fiction?
• The best in the field.
• Gotta have a gimmick.
• Have a great idea
• Finishing what you start.
• Getting near to publishers.
• Handling success.

Phil Jenkins' first writing job was as the film critic for the Sunday Post of Canada in 1980. He branched into magazines and wrote for such publications as Ottawa Magazine, National Geographic Traveller, Equinox, Heritage Canada, Harrowsmith and Toronto Life. He also wrote audio guides, street theatre, songs, brochures, research papers, radio and stage plays. Phil’s first book was Fields of Vision, 1991 a national bestseller. Three books have emerged since: An Acre of Time, which won the Canadian Author’s Association Lela Common Award for History; River Song; and Beneath My Feet. He’s also completed two commissioned books: The Library Book: An Overdue History of the Ottawa Public Library and A Better Heart on the Ottawa Heart Institute. Since 1991 he’s been a city columnist for The Ottawa Citizen. Phil has given workshops for adults and high school students on selling English for a living for fifteen years.
