Quebec Writers' Federation Workshops

Spring Session 2008

Develop your writing with the mentorship of an acclaimed professional writer and feedback from your peers.

Workshops take place at the QWF office, Suite 3, Atwater Library unless otherwise indicated.

WORD/CRAFT: AN INTRODUCTION TO POETRY WRITING AND PRACTICE
Outside of Montreal!
Four Sundays, from 12:00 noon to 3:15 p.m. (February 24, March 30, April 27 and May 25)

Morrin Centre, 44 chaussée des Écossais, Quebec City
Workshop leader: Aurian Haller

Most people think poetry is a mysterious act committed in solitary places, and yet poets need feedback and encouragement as much as anyone else. Are you looking for a chance to inspire yourself to do something with the drawer of poems you have stowed away? Do you need a fresh perspective on how to approach the process of writing itself? This workshop is aimed at those writers who have been writing poetry without much feedback, or have taken workshops and would like to further develop their skills. In four three-hour sessions we will focus on how to approach writing as well as explore writing practice techniques which stimulate and develop your work. Much of the pleasure of writing poetry is in the initial outpouring of inspiration. Writing practice is designed to tap into this creative impulse and put it into words.

Poet and singer/songwriter Aurian Haller has published poetry, reviews and articles in journals and anthologies in Ireland, Australia, the United States and Canada. His book, A Dream of Sulphur, was published by McGill-Queen's University Press. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing, an MA in English, and a PhD in Cultural Geography. He has taught Creative Writing in elementary schools, high schools, and CEGEPs in British Columbia and Quebec. He has taught for the Quebec Writers' Federation Mentorship program and is a participating member of the Quebec Writers-in-CEGEPs program. Aurian was writer in residence for the Vancouver Art Gallery in 2006 and is co-winner of The Malahat Review 2007 Long Poem Prize.
