THE ART OF WRITING SCIENCE AND NATURE
Saturday, April 12, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
1200 Atwater Avenue, Suite 3
Workshop leader: Wayne Grady
Science writing is the lingua franca of the information age. It includes genres as seemingly diverse as the quiet natural history essay, articles on medicine and health, and investigative reporting on such hard-hitting issues as the environment and genetic engineering.
Workshops participants will discuss the hot science topics of the day and their significance – how to talk about science – and how to translate them into writing that is accessible to the average reader while remaining true to the science. Using examples from some of today’s best science and nature writers, we will also learn how to develop an “idea” into a “story,” and how to pitch stories to magazine editors and book publishers.
Other topics to be discussed include research methods and interview preparation, story structure, the difference between magazine, newspaper and book writing, and science writing ethics.
Participants should come to the workshop having thought about and lightly researched an idea for a magazine article or book on a science issue.
Wayne Grady has been a magazine writer and editor for 30 years; he has also written 11 books of nonfiction, most recently The Great Lakes: The Natural History of a Changing Region; edited 15 anthologies of short fiction and nature writing; and translated 12 novels from the French. He has won numerous National Magazine Awards, three Science in Society awards, and has been shortlisted for four Governor-General's Awards, one of which he won. He is also an adjunct professor in the Creative Writing Program at the University of British Columbia.
