Participants will attend live performances, write reviews and benefit from analysis of their writing in a seminar situation.

Topics to be covered:Story Angle: How to find something new to say. Editors: What they need. Publicists: How they can help. Story Types: The interview, the retrospective, the advance story, the review. Story Structure: Why it matters. Honest and Dishonest Feeling: How to avoid hype and stay true to your integrity. PREPARATION - Bring to class a newspaper or magazine music story you think was well done. Bring one you think was poorly done.

John Goddard reports on world music for The Toronto Star; he co-authored Rock and Roll Toronto, a cheeky guide to the city’s historic rock ‘n roll sites. Before joining the Star, he served as National Arts & Entertainment Reporter for Southam News, 1998-99. He has written for Canada’s top magazines, including Saturday Night, Maclean’s, Chatelaine, Equinox, Harrowsmith and Books in Canada.

Application Process: Send a cover letter introducing yourself, your CV, and samples of your writing (max 2,000 words) to: admin@qwf.org. Please write “For Music Criticism Workshop” in the subject line.

Fee: $200, payable to “QWF” (some scholarship help may be made available)

This workshop is part of a new series on writing about the arts sponsored by the Quebec Writers’ Federation, the Quebec Drama Federation and The Rover.
