Quebec Writers' Federation Workshops

Fall Session 2010

LITERARY STYLISTICS: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
Tuesdays, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. (October 5 to November 23)

1200 Atwater Avenue, Suite 3

Workshop leader: Jeffrey Moore

This workshop is intended for fiction writers who are on the point of submitting material to publishers. To create a strong first impression, it is crucial that writers demonstrate a mastery of the stylistic tools of their trade. The workshop will examine the mechanics of strong and elegant fiction writing, focusing on the sentence: serial; parallel and balanced; hierarchic; concision within the sentence; emphasis; variety; rhythm. It will also emphasize the role of the "interrupters" (colon, semi-colon, comma, dash, parentheses, ellipsis) in creating dynamic prose and dialogue.

In addition to the holy trinity of style (lucidity, simplicity, euphony), the workshop will consider the dangers of overtly "lyrical" or "purple" passages and how they can undermine narrative elements.

Each participant will present a short story or first chapter of a novel for group discussion and dissection.
