MAKE 'EM LAUGH: THE ART OF COMEDY WRITING
Saturday, October 23, 2010, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
1200 Atwater Avenue, Suite 3
Workshop leader: David McGimpsey
This one-day workshop is an introduction to the art of humour writing. The objective is to consider strategies for enhancing the humour within each student's own work, specifically considering the work's own objectives and unique perspective. We will not only look at "humor writing" as a specific genre but will consider the specifics of joke-writing and creating humorous contexts for all literary genres—from fiction to journalism to personal essays, from sketch to stand-up. As such, and considering even the most "serious" literary works have comedic moments, this course would consider humor to be a large-scale concept which can improve or add a needed human depth to one's writing.
Participants should bring in a sample of their own writing for feedback. It would also be helpful to give some serious thought to the question "What makes you laugh?"
