Quebec Writers' Federation Workshops
Fall Session 2010
RADIO DOCUMENTARY: INTRODUCTION TO DEEP LISTENING, INTERVIEWING, STORYTELLING, RECORDING, MIXING
Mondays, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., October 4 to November 29. No meeting on October 11
1200 Atwater Avenue, Suite 3
Workshop leader: David Gutnick
In this workshop participants will discover new ways of hearing their world. A well-made radio documentary really only follows one rule: not to be boring. Over the eight weeks we'll listen to many different styles of documentaries, take audio trips to many unexpected places, and get inside the lives of people we'll get to love, pity and hate.
Together, participants will examine all the ways that stories can be told on the radio. Individually, they will be asked to come up with an idea for a short-form documentary and develop a script during the workshop.
Participants will also learn about the equipment used to record and mix radio documentaries. There is a possibility of a visit to CBC studios for a demonstration.
There is no required reading or listening to do before enrolling, but during the course of the workshop participants will be asked to listen to a number of radio documentaries and read various texts pertaining to documentary making. Access to high-speed internet, though not required, would be useful.
You will not make a radio documentary in this course, but you will come away enthusiastic about wanting to give it a try.
